NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay At NY Islanders

POSTED: 12:38 am EST December 22, 2009

(Sports Network) - Ryan Malone had a pair of power-play goals in the third period and added two assists to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Vincent Lecavalier and Steven Stamkos each had a goal and an assist for the Lightning, who have won two in a row following a six-game slide (0-5-1). Tampa Bay had not won consecutive games since beating Montreal and Minnesota back- to-back in early November.

Mike Smith stopped 36 shots in the victory.

Nate Thompson and Trent Hunter had the goals for the Islanders, who have dropped three in a row. Dwayne Roloson made 24 saves in the loss.

"We have to get back doing the little things we have to do as a team. We're generating a lot of stuff but we're not getting the quality chances that we're giving up," Roloson said.

Shortly into the third period the Lightning went on the power play on a delay- of-game penalty, and Malone capitalized. He got a loose puck in the slot following a rebound, then buried a shot in an open space on the right side of the net at 2:48 for a 3-2 Tampa lead.

At the 11:00 mark, New York's Andy Sutton went to the box for interference, and Malone scored on a tip in only 39 seconds into the power play. Smith made 10 saves in the third to secure the win.

"If we play our game, we have confidence we can play with anyone. I think we're starting to realize that and believe it," Malone said.

The Islanders got on the board late in the first while on the power play, as Josh Bailey fed a pass from behind the net for Hunter, who one-timed it past Smith with 3:13 remaining.

Stamkos tipped in a fastbreak goal from the slot 6:20 into the middle period, but 10 minutes later, Thompson's first goal of the season put the Islanders back on top. Lecavalier's snap shot from the left circle got past Roloson in the final minute of the second to even the contest moving to the third.

Game Notes:

Tampa was 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Islanders went 1-for-6...Martin St. Louis had two helpers for the Lightning...The Islanders had won four in a row at home against the Lightning.
