GAME NOTES: The UCF Knights will try to carry their momentum from their recent victory into this weekend when they host the Tulane Green Wave in a Conference-USA tussle at Bright House Network Stadium. It has been a rough season for the Green Wave, as the team has dropped seven games thus far. The last time Tulane was in action the team suffered a 28-20 loss to Rice. It was the fourth setback in the last five contests for the Green Wave and it also left the team with a meager 1-5 ledger in league action. As for the Knights, they are coming off a thrilling, 37-32 victory over the Houston Cougars, who came into that matchup ranked 12th in the nation. It was the third victory in the last four games for UCF, which is now 4-2 in league play and an even better 5-1 at home. The Knights hold a slim 2-1 edge over Tulane in the all-time series, but the lone victory for the Green Wave came in the last matchup, as Tulane defeated USC, 10-9 back in 2006. Production offensively has been tough to come by for the Green Wave, who come crashing into this matchup averaging just 17.2 ppg, behind a pedestrian 336.1 total ypg. The ground game has been wildly inconsistent, as the team is churning out just 117.1 ypg on a mere 3.5 yards per carry. The passing attack unfortunately has not been much better, as Ryan Griffin and Joe Kemp have both struggled under center. Griffin has thrown for just 1,099 yards, but has seven touchdowns against four interceptions, while Kemp has tossed four touchdowns along with six interceptions. One thing is for sure and that is it does not matter who is under center for Jeremy Williams, as the wideout is leading the team with 72 receptions, 992 yards and five touchdowns. Surprisingly the last time Tulane was in action the team posted 402 total yards, but despite the solid showing the Green Wave still fell to Rice. Griffin was solid in the setback though, as the quarterback threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scores went to Williams, who finished the game with 113 yards on 10 receptions. Andre Anderson led the ground game with 135 yards and now has a team-best 913 yards on the season. On top of the lack of production offensively, the team has also struggled to find its way on the defensive side of the football, as Tulane is being abused for 36.5 ppg on 412.5 total ypg. The real issue for this unit has come against the run, as opponents are pounding Tulane for 201.3 ypg, and out of the 42 touchdowns surrendered by this defense, 26 have come via the run. The defense has also struggled to make many big plays, or pressure the opposing quarterback, as Tulane heads into this matchup with just nine takeaways (five fumbles and four interceptions) and only 12 sacks. In the loss to Rice, the Green Wave held the Owls to just 331 total yards, including just 117 rushing yards on 3.7 yards per carry. Unfortunately however, the defense was torched for four passing touchdowns and finished the game with no takeaways and only one sacks. Much like their counterpart, the Knights have been hit or miss offensively, and can not seem to find a groove with the football. UCF is producing just 23.3 ppg on the year and that is coming off of a pedestrian 323.7 total ypg. The ground game has been up and down throughout the season, as the team is churning out just 119.3 ypg on a mere 3.3 ypc. Brynn Harvey has been the main attraction out of the backfield for UCF, as the tailback has rushed for 818 yards and 10 touchdowns. Under center the team is being led by Brett Hodges, who has also been inconsistent at times. However, the signal caller comes into this matchup with 1,799 yards and 11 touchdowns against eight interceptions. Surprisingly the last time the team was on the field, the Knights disposed of a strong Houston squad, 37-32. Harvey had one of his top games on the year, rushing for 139 yards and three touchdowns. As for Hodges, he did toss an interception in the win, but other than that the quarterback was on point, hitting 21-of-25 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. Although the offense has been sporadic at best, the defense has done everything in its power to keep UCF above .500 on the year. The Knights are holding opponents to just 22.1 ppg, and have done a terrific job against the run, limiting teams to a meager 81.5 ypg on just 2.5 ypc. However, the defense has been tormented by the pass, as opponents at torching the Knights for 278.5 ypg through the air. Fortunately the unit has been able to rely on its big play abilities, as the Knights have recorded 20 takeaways (12 fumbles and eight interceptions), while also getting tremendous pressure on the quarterback, collecting 31 sacks thus far. The defense was once again torched by the pass in its matchup against Houston, allowing 377 yards through the air. However, despite the inability to stop the pass, the Knights were still victorious. UCF forced three turnovers in the win and held the Cougars to a mere 46 rushing yards on 3.1 yards per attempt. The Knights are riding high on momentum after defeating Houston last week, and now they get a chance to close out their home schedule with a win over Tulane. Look for the Knights to jump all over the Green Wave en route to an easy win. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: UCF 38, Tulane 17Saturday, November 21st, 2:00 p.m. (et)
