Roy, Blazers Edge Spurs

POSTED: 3:44 am EDT November 1, 2008

(Sports Network) - Brandon Roy scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting to help the Portland Trail Blazers hold off the San Antonio Spurs for a thrilling 100-99 triumph at the Rose Garden.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 23 points on 10-of-22 field goals for the Trail Blazers, who dropped a rough opening-night match to the Lakers on Tuesday, 96-76.

Tim Duncan scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Tony Parker had 24 points and handed out 11 assists for the Spurs, who have dropped their first two games after losing to Phoenix in their season opener.

The Trail Blazers continued to hold a lead throughout the second half but Michael Finley hit a three to make it a one-point game with just over four minutes remaining. Aldridge answered with a triple of his own, but Roger Mason also hit from beyond the arc. A Mason jumper tied the game at 95-95 with 1:55 remaining and a layup from Parker gave the Spurs their first lead since the first half on the next possession.

"You've got to outwork them because they're such a good team," Portland head coach Nate McMillan said of the Spurs. "Any time you beat these elite teams you've got to come with a lot of energy and intensiveness for the whole game."

Portland came back and earned a trip to the charity stripe for two twirls of the twine and Aldridge hit a jumper from the top of the key after an Ime Udoka miss from downtown for a three-point edge with 34 seconds left.

"They are unbelievably talented with a great deal of athleticism, length, good character, people who know their roles, a really aggressive team -- well disciplined -- and somebody that everyone will have to reckon with as time goes by," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

Parker also earned a trip to the stripe on a foul from Roy and he sunk both for a one-point game two seconds later. Following a Portland timeout, Travis Outlaw couldn't get one to fall on a layup with seven seconds left and the Spurs ran the floor with a chance to win it but Finley's jumper at the buzzer rimmed out to end the game in thrilling fashion.

"Got a great shot (at the end). Many times in that situation -- when the defense can't get set -- you get a much better shot than when you try to be smart," Popovich said of the decision to run the floor for the win and not call timeout. "You would die to get that shot to win the game, but sometimes they don't go in."

A Parker layup and a pair of free throws from Desmon Farmer down the stretch allowed San Antonio to edge the Trail Blazers 22-21 in the opening quarter.

Both teams shared the lead in the second in a neck-and-neck battle. Consecutive layups from Roy and Aldridge gave Portland its most significant lead of the game to that point, 48-42, with 55 seconds left in the half. Farmer and Roy traded threes and the Trail Blazers owned a 51-45 lead heading into the second half.

Portland opened up a 64-55 lead on a Joel Przybilla dunk and a pair of free throws from Outlaw with just under six minutes to play in the third. The Spurs kept it close, though, and trailed by eight entering the final quarter.

Channing Frye scored six straight points in the fourth, giving Portland an 84-72 advantage, but San Antonio wouldn't go quietly and put together an 11-1 run on two triples from Udoka and one from Mason to cut the lead to two with 7:25 to play.

"Even though they hit shot after shot, our guys remained calm and had a good response," McMillan said. "We made sure we kept our intensity in the third quarter and in the fourth."
